Pest Management Solutions for Specialty Crops and Specialty Uses
Mission Statement
The mission of the IR-4 Project is to facilitate regulatory approval of sustainable pest management technology for specialty crops and specialty uses to promote public well-being.
About IR-4 Blurb
The mission of the IR-4 Project is to facilitate regulatory approval of sustainable pest management technologies for specialty crops and specialty uses to promote public well-being. Working directly with stakeholders across the country, IR-4 conducts research and develops data necessary for the registration of safe, effective pest management tools to meet the needs of growers. To learn more, visit our website: ir4project.org.
Talking Points
- For over 60 years, IR-4 has been a vital ally to the specialty crop community by increasing pest management options, supporting healthy harvests, and generating economic growth.
- When specialty crops thrive, so does the economy. According to a 2022 report by Michigan State University’s Center for Economic Analysis, the IR-4 Project contributes an estimated $8.97 billion to the annual GDP. The study also found that seven jobs today can be attributed to every $1,000 of public investment in IR-4.
- Specialty crops are essential components of a healthy diet and a thriving landscape. When we protect these crops, we reduce food waste, support a nutritious and accessible food supply, and support farmer livelihoods.
- Since its founding in 1963, IR-4 has facilitated the registration of over 23,000 pest management products for use on food crops, along with many more for environmental horticulture crops.
- Guided by the needs of growers, IR-4 researches sustainable pest management solutions and facilitates the registration of new tools for use on fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs, spices, ornamentals, and more.
- Putting growers’ needs first, IR-4 assesses tools of all kinds—including reduced-risk chemical and bio-based pesticides, as well as emerging technologies. In addition to working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to secure product and use registrations in the US, IR-4 helps harmonize international pesticide regulations, removing barriers to agricultural trade.
